Cardinals Elect Joseph Peter Kelly, Who Will Be Pope Dominic II

By Andrew Smith

VATICAN CITY - A puff of white smoke from the newly restored Sistine Chapel announced to the cheers of thousands of faithful that the gathering of Catholic cardinals picked a new pope from among their number on Thursday, choosing the cardinal from Australia.

The new pope, Joseph Peter Kelly, will be called Dominic II and will be the 272nd pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. He is also the youngest pope to be chosen in the last thousand years at the age of 33, and a member of the Dominican order.

"I would like to thank you for your embrace," the new pope, dressed in white, said from the balcony of the newly rebuilt St. Peter's Basilica as thousands cheered below. "These have been trying times, but they will get better."

Speaking in accented Italian, he blessed the faithful and asked the audience to "Pray for me, and we'll see each other soon."

He bade a farewell and the crowd cheered the new pope.

Dominic II had led volunteer centers in Australia during the Reaper War where he would preach to the faithful and helped the local resistance to stay safe from the Reapers, and since the death of the previous pope, during the Reaper invasion, he has been a voice of leadership for the Church.

He inherits a church with an array of challenges, such as a shortage of priests, the incorporation of alien faiths, and a lack of leadership due to the near genocide of humanity by the Reapers.

Dominic spoke about the Reapers in the homily during his first mass as pope. He stated that we should "forgive them their trespasses, but forget them not. We were delivered from their evil once, but we must be wary."

He has yet to comment on the five year plan by the SATAE.

Had to ask. If only to get the mental image of an obese geth out of my head.

Let me tell you a secret. There is no such thing.

Dyson
Geth do not exist in physical space.

Additionally, geth platforms are not equipped with power cells based on organic lipid tissue consumption.

MVR
Thank you Dyson. But the question was actually more a theoretical one. Could you have platforms that could run on lipids and therefore get fat?

Also, is there a way you could be considered "fat" as in too large for what you are in a process form? Too much data on whatever storage unit you use for yourself?

And I use "you" meaning all geth, not specifically you, Dyson.

(Also, yay, new pope. Watched a holo of his address, and I was impressed.)

Let me tell you a secret. There is no such thing.

for an organic, fat means excessive amounts of fat stored in the body. Could a geth maybe have an excessive amount of... useless or junk code attached to itself and therefore called fat?

This one will avoid discussion of the respectable Terrobyte's sexual prowess, as it has cause to believe such matters are of significance to the volus ego, and it would not wish to cause offence. Please excuse it for avoiding immersion in the established flow of the conversation. It wonders, however, if it may inquire as to where the other arrived at its figure of 214,310 recognized religions? It would be most grateful for clarification! It assumes, if the other will excuse its haste in doing so, that the figure is quoted from an established source and has not been arrived at through personal study; it understands the other is not a scholar. This one wonders which source was used, as the recognized count is subject to variation based on the definition of religion accepted by the intellectuals in question; indeed, there is a lively ongoing debate on the subject in xenotheological bubblings.

It should also note that not all religious traditions make use of ceremonial hats, nor do all recognized faiths invest the elderly with authority. This one clarifies, for example, that hanar do not wear hats (although this one did meet a pleasant hanar on the Citadel who chose to do so).

It hopes this has been informative!

If it may inquire further of the other, it has an additional question. This one has contextualized the phrase "god is dead" to prominent philosophical traditions and notable individual thinkers on Irune, Earth and Khar'shan. May it inquire as to whether the other was intending to proclaim its allegiance to any of these established perspectives, or whether the other's use of the phrase was coincidental?

Energy availability would likely dictate that such a platform have extraordinarily slow processing speeds.

Lipid-based power systems are theoretically possible. However, such systems work on sufficiently incompatible processing paradigms to be inefficient for synthetic use. Additionally, basic behavioral modeling suggests that such paradigms would quickly invite impediments to geth-organic relations, as comparisons to the medical conditions referred to as “ardat-yakshi” and “vampirism” would be made, particularly if extraction from organic species proved practical. As geth have recently established peaceful relations with Creators, research into energy paradigms involving organic conquest and farming for organic tissue has been postponed indefinitely.

It should be noted that such farming techniques are currently dismissed as unfeasible; basic simulations suggest that it would take considerably more energy developing such mechanisms than would be extracted through such processes.

It is possible for a geth runtime to occupy more virtual space than is necessary; however, optimization protocols consistently work to prevent this as such conditions pose security vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malicious external sources. It is also possible for a geth runtime to exceed the storage space available for a given platform; however, geth platform data storage is sufficient to contain runtimes for the foreseeable future.

Yes.

Young man from the order known for their deeper thought, teaching and charity with severely weakened or non-existent opposition from older cardinals? At risk of calling out the obvious, this man could turn the church towards a whole new direction if he can consolidate his power base from the fragmented masses. Unless he starts to dig up every tradition the church has had to buff up his platform and to appease the remaining elders.

Dominic spoke about the Reapers in the homily during his first mass as pope. He stated that we should "forgive them their trespasses, but forget them not. We were delivered from their evil once, but we must be wary."

Yes, I am quite sure the Reapers were victims here, unable to control their genocidal urges to kill all of God's creation and remake it in their image. Did they perhaps use salvaged Reaper components to rebuild the St. Peter's basilica? At least you aren't preaching the same as Sovereign Nation yet.

Actually, when you hear him speak, it's not so much that he considers Reapers victims as he just asks for them to be forgiven. Do as Jesus taught.

We shouldn't forget what they've done nor should we accept it. However we should forgive it as they have stopped doing it.

I'd say it's more akin to what the governments of the galaxy have been doing already. He's not saying "Let's forgive the Reapers and be friends with them forever", but that we should keep an eye out on them without engaging them in open hostility.

Ah, a new Pope! Hopefully he does not get assassinated much like Pope Innocent XIV. That was a horrible mess. I remember reading Giuseppe Di Abruzzi's biography about the man. Interesting tale, let me tell you.
