"District, No More” Asks Vietnamese

by Anita Wu, Vox Populi

EARTH - Placards, posters, and pickets have defined life just outside the the Alliance’s regional administrative zone in the port city of Haiphong, the center of SATAE’s provisional authority in Vietnam. Every day, the thirty nine soldiers guarding its’ single checkpoint look out at an ever-growing crowd of students, veterans, and nationalists waving signs boldly condemning Hackett, condemning the Systems Alliance, and demanding that SATAE’s military administration in the region be disintegrated.

“No one was asked. No one was consulted,” said an anonymous former civil servant, as he aired out his frustrations with Vox Populi. “Vietnam liberated Vietnam. When the Reapers came, the Alliance did not rescue us. When we fought, we fought for a nation, and as a nation. On our own blood, sweat, and tears. And when the war came to an end, it was only then that the Alliance came with troops and tanks, and only then to make our decisions for us - to unmake the nation we thought we were fighting for.”

Despite that, the Alliance has not budged; and business continues as usual, unmoved by mounting discontent just outside the gates of the city’s administrative zone and throughout the former nation.

“I know how they must feel, and it’s regrettable, but we can’t just pack up and leave. Hanoi is still a complete mess, and we’re still pulling out bodies from Ho Chi Minh City. Expecting them to recover without Alliance resources is insane,” said Staff Commander Nguyen Quan when asked for a statement.

“They keep saying five more years, five more years. Why do we need to wait?” Phan Thị Yin complained - a veteran of the Reaper War, who’d spent five months engaged in the costly urban war in Hanoi. A war she firmly believes was fought by the Vietnamese People’s Army. “Why should we believe them? They think we’re children, unable to take responsibility for ourselves, unable to make our own decisions. Every day, people wake up, look out their apartment and they don’t see Haiphong, they see a district. If we want to go it alone, why should they stop us?”

Gilgamesh How about that SATAE took over a terminus colony and is strangling it to death by illegally denying it access to its own resources?

You mean one of the largest untouched sites of prothean ruins in the galaxy?

Gilgamesh How about that SATAE has forced every colony into 0 economic growth and is stealing our resources with no compensation?

Aside from the ships flying overhead as a defense fleet, of course (which, given the unceasing bitching the colonists are giving, they will be happy to rescind the moment the Five-Year-Plan is finished).

Gilgamesh How about Bloody Fucking Sunday?

You mean the alleged payback attack that soldiers made for “accidentally hit[ting] a marine patrolman with skipping stones?”

Uh-huh. Suuuuuuuuuuuuure. I'm totally sure that account isn't spun in any shape or form.

Gilgamesh How about ignoring every civilian request and protest made over the last two years?

This include the ones to get the “filthy aliens,” “bird people,” “frogs” and walking tits” out of your infrastructure? ‘Cause, uh, I think those succeeded in a few areas.

‘Tis why I’m not in Spain anymore.

Gilgamesh This is bullshit. If SATAE meant to give up power in three years then the yoke would be getting lighter. They wouldn't be beating the shit out of protestors and tightening the fucking yoke.

Your repetition of the word “yoke” to induce images of slavery aside, there’s a Dwick joke in here somewhere.

GilgameshSATAE is getting its name run through the dirt because SATAE is fundamentally pretty shit.

SATAE is getting its name run through the dirt because humans on the whole are ignorant, uppity, short-sighted twits, and as SATAE is the strongest central means to restructure your home planet, it can do no right.

Gilgamesh Seriously, the turians literally nuked their own homeworld on a grand scale and they aren't doing half the shit that SATAE is.

Palaven was also putting up the second largest fight next to you, and realized that the final fight, for better or for worse, was going to be on Earth. They nuked themselves for you. Additionally, the Hierarchy doesn’t “do half the shit that SATAE does” because it is understood by most turians that they will have to put aside their short-term prospects in order to help their entire species rebuild.

This is precisely why I cannot stand humans in large quantities. It’s precisely why I hate the center of the galaxy suddenly being at the “crux of humanity.” The Alliance may do its damnedest to hide the rest of you from sight, but now that the Citadel is perched right over you, we can watch in disgust at what a collective, immature shrieking wall of hatchlings you all are.

By the way, your 'understanding' of the Vietnamese would be ridiculously offensive if you weren't an alien (if I'm assuming right). The implication that they're a bunch of idiots afraid of change and clinging to what they know under duress speaks for itself.

Yes, because "give the Vietnamese more regional power" equals "no power puppet government." I'm no fool - the Alliance obviously won't relinquish control of Vietnam, nor any other country on earth, for the next five years, as part of their plan. My point was that easing them into control (probably something like the SATAE is planning once the 5-year-plan runs out) would ease the minds of the people.

And how does tradition equal idiocy, exactly? I resent that implication - tradition brings knowledge, strength, and unity in times of stress. Tradition is very important to maintaining a unified society, and what I was saying was more praise than criticism.

Clearly that gives the Alliance free reign to sit on a planet not within their territory and to bar the residents of that planet from exploiting the resources they own. There's prothean shit there! Fuck those colonists, who cares about their livelihood? By the way Mr. Spiza there's a prothean toilet underneath your bar. We'll just be demolishing it now. No you can't have compensation, now fuck off.
The_Sarcastic_Salarian wrote:Aside from the ships flying overhead as a defense fleet, of course (which, given the unceasing bitching the colonists are giving, they will be happy to rescind the moment the Five-Year-Plan is finished).
Defending their citizens is one of the responsibilities of any legitimate government. Defense fleets are not something to be grateful for they are something to be expected. I'm sure Mannovai would be somewhat miffed if the Salarian Union ceased defending her.

Uh-huh. Suuuuuuuuuuuuure. I'm totally sure that account isn't spun in any shape or form.
And I have no doubt that the Alliance garrison in no way used indiscriminate force against protesters. Clearly they are vastly different from and morally superior to the vast majority of cases in which the military suppressed legal protests in the history of Earth at large. Because clearly the SA is a 'good' military government.

When in doubt just portray the opposition as drooling morally bankrupt xenophobes right? Way to give a non-answer. Have you considered working for Systems Alliance PR? I'm sure they would love to have you.

What was that you were saying about filthy aliens?

Ooh the guilt card. Well played. And perhaps the Hierarchy does not do half the shit the Alliance does because the Hierarchy has not turned all of their colonies into economically stagnant sweat shops dedicated to the sole purpose of servicing one planet.

Again with the xenophobia, your blatant hypocrisy is palpable. This is precisely why I can't stand Salarians in large quantities. Can you imagine if the Citadel was over Sur'Kesh? Then everyone would have to watch in disgust at what underhanded, backstabbing, arrogant, cowards you all are. Oh hey look. I can do it too.

Wouldn’t be the first time.

Seriously, out of all thing things you chose to mock me with, you picked the bar that’s been attacked by Cerberus, carpeted with bullets, blown up twice, and that I had to pay out of pocket to restore?

You are an idiot.

Go look at the average Hierarchy turian’s salary. Go check out what non-military citizens are being reshuffled into. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

My viewpoint stems from direct contact with humans, both in SATAE and otherwise, as I tried to provide knowledge-based, infrastructural, and chemically-based aid to them for over a year. There is a very clear dichotomy between the two.

At worst, SATAE as a whole is filled with incompetent militarists trying to play the role of interim politicians, builders and peacekeepers. At worst, humanity as a whole is filled with murderous, literally xenophobic supremacists who would like nothing better than to slaughter anyone without Homo Sapiens DNA, then rot in their own sewage and wonder why nobody will help them.

So yes, I am a bit racist towards humans, with very good reason.

Because I'm sure the corporate executive who takes contracts from the SA has no inherent bias, and no reason to parrot the official statement. Nope. None at all. Those poor tough combat trained marines were clearly the victims.

In other words turians are culturally inclined to be willing to put up with economically stagnant sweat shops. How wonderful for them. Let's all be turians.

So you're judging a race of billions based on the individuals you met within a single country, in a single year. Congratulations. You're just like those humans you hate so much.

Patriot Ar' ye fookers 'appy now?
I love it when the Salarian understands humanity better than 3/4ths of the humans on this board.

Humans as always are dirty pieces of shit with no value, but we have the chance to fix that. And the Alliance will fix it, or we'll burn it down and continue on our merry little path until the Turians march in and put us under their boots. Which wouldn't be a bad thing.

Should of left these people to the wolves. Then we'd see if they'd enjoy peaceful commonwealth.

May I suggest that the next time you try to shame someone with their alleged hypocrisy, that you take two seconds to do an extranet search?

Biased != Inaccurate. Nice try on that fallacy, though.

Swing and a miss, kid. What was that you were saying about racism?

I ask because I think I misheard the last part of your post. I think it went something along the lines of “I’m judging a body politic stretched across Alliance space based on the individuals I’ve seen on Ur and heard less-than-reputable news stories about, in a single year,” but I could be wrong.

To use a human saying, "Hello, Pot? It’s Kettle. You’re black."
