Look, Mr. Hanar, I don't know about your religion, I tend to avoid that sort of thing. I have enough people trying to keep tabs on me already (family, in case you're wondering). I don't know about souls. But I know when I see someone who's stuck in a loop, you know? You're just exhibiting the same pattern in your attitudes over and over, and now you're taking it out of the political and into the religious. Nobody likes being told that they constantly owe other people for what they have. When you do that, it slides into a sort of implicit bullying. I mean, it cultivates guilt and a sense of moral debt, and it keeps the other person from feeling they have means to challenge you, because then they're undermining their own position. It's really, really easy to turn it into a means of control, and the more you insist on it the more it makes it look like you're trying to keep people under your thumb. Er, tentacles. Whatever it is you have.

And you're not doing much to help your side of the issue here. I don't know what the hanar think, but they have influence over the drell - I mean they're pretty much your people's version of the clan dalatrass, all things considered. Except in your case that bond isn't instinctive, it's artificial. Really artificial. I mean, drell and hanar are as different as day and night. Well, ocean and desert. If it wasn't for the history, for a decision made a couple of centuries back, then that relationship just wouldn't exist. And I think it's a healthy one, actually, in theory, or at least it was when it was established. But because it's so artificial you have to keep reinforcing it, and then it gets ugly.

It's like in human politics, right, where you start with the people wanting something and someone gets into power by giving it to them, by responding to their desires? They claim power based on the will of the people. Okay, that's fine. But then you have a precedent and an expectation that authority comes from giving the majority what they want. So your subjects become tools; they have to become tools, because suddenly your mandate for power comes from their participation. 'What they want' is the justification for your authority, so you need to make sure you control 'what they want' or there's no stability, and you want that stability because you benefit from being in the position you are. You can't just leave them be, you need to be constantly manipulating them so they'll keep you in power - and you do it in a way that makes it look like you're serving them. You get them to think they want something, you convince them only you can give it to them, and then they're just pulled back and forth, fought over like another resource. When the hanar are telling drell that the hanar gave them everything -- right down to souls now, apparently -- it's just so easy to see the potential for that sort of dysfunction. The relationship is artificial, and the hanar benefit, so they don't want the relationship to end. And because the justification for it is built on the service and charity hanar once gave to drell, it's easy to disguise the fact that in the long-run it's really the drell serving the hanar.

I mean, they did save your people, and that's why a lot of you feel you owe something. That's fine, but it's like a self-enforcing thing when they're told from birth that the Compact is something they should want, and the hanar can abuse it. I'm not saying they do, I'm saying that if you see that happening sometimes I'm not really going to doubt you.

It feels as though it should point out that A Humble Hanar's opinion does not reflect the opinion of the Illuminated Primacy or hanar in general.

While it is true that many believe that the Enkindlers are solely responsible for giving every intelligent species said intelligence, we are aware it was done with different degrees of subtlety with which they did it. For the hanar it was as overt as the protheans (increasingly distinct entities from the far less mortal and material Enkindlers) uplifting us, for others it was in the guise of gods.

Thus, in many traditions, it has been reasoned that any species capable of reasoning and speech has a soul, granted to them, one way or another, by the Enkindlers.
