Horses and ponies are related species, but they aren't the same thing. Horses are larger and less, well, fat looking. Clydesdale is a variety of horse bred for labor and hauling large loads; few ride them. Riding horses tend to be slimmer and sleek. Hore riding competitions are still performed here on Earth, a traditional sport hundreds of years old. It originated as a sport amongst the gentry as a means of showing off their skills at riding, as the cost of maintaining a riding horse put it beyond the means of most citizens making horseback riding a noble skill to boast of. Horseback riding in later centuries is a lot more open, but it's never lost the venier of the higher class. Stylized dress uniforms for the riders, well kept fields, decorated obstacles, and an air of sophistication still follow the sport to this day.
Any sufficiently advanced riddle is indistinguishable from nonsense. - Parson Goetei |

I asked around when I was on Earth and we saw some, I gather they're very intelligent and versatile, historically used in transport and agriculture (and warfare, sadly) in virtually every region they inhabit. According to some of the people we spoke to (mainly the 'driver' of a carriage we went on a ride in - a horse-drawn vehicle, like a vesti (is that right? I only vaguely remember my courses on Rannoch back at the Academy... for that matter, I can see how vesti and creatures like jisen and ka'for wouldn't really have been relevant for the last three centuries - maybe they'll make a comeback, if the domesticated varieties are still around. And assuming I haven't just gotten them completely mixed up with another species and/or type of vehicle, and I'm talking about a submarine by mistake, or something. For clarity's sake, it's like an asari fane)... where was I? Oh right - evidently the image of a horse and rider has tremendous significance in some cultures and historical eras, a human's horse being not just a pet and mode of transport but also a companion and trusted ally. Adorable creatures, one of the pony kind kissed me once. :) And they get big, too - there's a thing called clydesdales, they're enormous. They're a breed of... I asked at the time, but for some reason I keep getting it mixed up, I'm pretty sure they're a breed of horse, not a stage of horse. I think that's it, it's not like 'pony, horse, clydesdale' in order of size. They have a whole vocabulary for life stages though, so I may be wrong. Have to look it up on extrapedia when I'm home. Ah, I see. Not really a fan of animal-drawn modes of transportation. My late husband talked me into riding a jaytix (essentially the turian version of a vesti) and the stupid animal decided to ignore its handler and march off the trail. Getting us stuck in a mudpit. Also it smelled horrible. I had to shut off my olfactory filters. asari_promiscuity wrote:
Daia, you have to tell me about your experience some time.
I'll consult my old photo albums, I'm sure there's a whole lot of Sanka in there (it's just, well, you know how photo albums get after a few decades - I really ought to tag more thoroughly). And if you were wondering, yes, named after Councilor Sanka - he got that same kind of "I'm concentrating!" intent look she used to have at press conferences (in our Sanka's case, while stalking a mini-playdrone).[/quote]Plika does this! Sounds fun. Actually, you're on the Citadel. were do you take her to play, the Presidium? From the responses here I could imagine some repelling reactions in real life. ![]() |

The Presidium is terrible. So no. I don't take her there.
I think you'll also forgive me for not broadcasting over the extranet which parks we frequent (since it is fairly obvious other quarians read everything I write) But yes. I do get a lot of weird looks (though that predates her) and a lot dumb questions. Like, "where did you get a baby Keeper!?" |

Owning a baby keeper actaully sounds adorable :3.

Are there baby Keepers? I know they're still off-limits to civilians, but there have been news reports here and there (not in any depth, sadly, at least not the ones I've caught) about proposals for restarting the old study programmes. They're so deliberate and mechanistic, I suppose I always imagined them being spawned from, you know, Ma Keeper or whatever, at full size, just for efficiency's sake. Pop out of your pod, put on your little antenna backpack, and off to work.

Horses are... well, you can say a lifestyle.
For humans they have a huge symbolic load. The warrior on horseback, the knight; the aristocrat and nobleman. Horses and swords go together in that mystique. Horses are used to drive cattle, to run bulls (yeah, its a bad habit from my homeland), for combat, riding - all the western and cowboy thing is built and lives off the horse - and racing. Horse racing was pretty big, and never lost its appeal really. With a few thousands of years of history, its only natural that a whole vocabulary grew up around it. A man on horseback is related to power, bravery, wealth, danger and particularly freedom. The peon with a badly fitting helmet and a spear can be a serf, the fighters on horseback are free men (there's exceptions of course. Has history ever been anything less than complicated?) Motorbikes, particularly harleys on the old american highways - there's your free horseman again, in modern fashion. There were until the reaper invasion frequent tournaments of modern-day men fighting the way the ancients did, jousting and so on. You can find movies of those online. They were the ancient forms of armoured warfare, and pretty nasty at that. Me, back when I jumped bulls near home (its a sort of proof of bravery, showing you're a man; teenage thing - and no animals harmed either, we were the ones getting the odd horn), I got in a few horse rides on the fields outside. The feeling is... well, its liberating. There are songs about horses; huge quantities of paintings; poems. "Four things greater than all things are, Women and Horses and Power and War" - old quote for you there Modern uses: a bit up from my own area, in Toledo, there's at least a case of a group of rancheros riding down a bunch of husks on horses. They were also used a lot in the hills and wild lands for the resistance to move around fast, because horses eat off the land. No fuel or power cells needed. asari_promiscuity wrote: Pariah wrote:Does it even do anything but wander around in fields?
