Probe Passes Edge of Galaxy

An asari probe, dubbed Nir, has been confirmed as passing through the “halo shock” that surrounds the Milky Way and into dark space. Researchers were on Thessia were startled to receive the VI’s ping, as Nir was believed destroyed a century ago, when TCI and Serrice both received reports of catastrophic system failure, and the project was disbanded in the years following.

“It’s exciting to be back,” says Ciria T’Pyl, one of the original team members who confirmed the source. “Nir constantly surprises us, and it’s always been an honor to be a part of the team that envisioned her.”

Nir is the first known functioning probe to reach dark space, and provided the survey and experimentation systems are still active, can offer insight into what lays beyond our galaxy - an unknown and highly theorized area that is truly the “final frontier”.

Ho, look at that!
First the Star of Atheme and now Nir! I read about it in school, when it was supposed to enter the transition zone. I wonder what else is still flying around out there that will surprise us in the future.

I'm just on my way to Omega currently but kind of feels also like 'new frontier' to me...

How in the hell did the signal get back here? I have a hard time believing there are any functioning comm buoys that close to the galaxy's edge, particularly after the loss of the Relays cut most of them off.

Fascinating. I wonder how many asari generations it will take before it manages to get to the nearest galaxy? I wonder what it's running and what it's mean of propulsion are.

I give it a few years before the thing gets eaten by more robotic murdersquids. Or something.

Jeral the Improbable Here I am. Just being awesome.
Unless I'm mistaken, geth/quarian space is relatively close to the edge of the galaxy. If the drone left near that area, it's not that far of a stretch to say it probably came through that relay system.

Did they have QEC systems back when they launched that thing? If you can stick one in a van, you can stick one in a space probe.

Considering the expense involved in QEC, that's, uh.

That's ridiculous.

Y'know, that's a good question. Were the Reapers taking out previous probes? It'd certainly make sense...

Peaceful life and liking it that way.

It's also nearly a full 180 degrees away from asari space, and was (until recently) under the control of a hostile synthetic intelligence. I find it unlikely they would have released such a probe in that direction, or that the geth wouldn't have located an object broadcasting its location across space.

Impractical exploration projects usually don't get that kind of funding. Plus, if it had a QEC, they would have been able to know where it was for the past hundred years.

It'd probably be well past ten. The distances between galaxies is awe-striking in comparison to the distance this probe has traveled from it's launch site.

This is pretty awesome and confusing. How did the probe start to work suddenly after a hundred-year break? How long does it take for the new commands to reach it and get a reply? What is there in dark space, more reapers?

Or, more likely, something much worse.

Never really had a reason to be.

I'm very interested to hear how a signal managed to get so far too. Granted, it took a while to get there, but should have taken much longer.

We have serious communication delays from the company ship to our main office, just from within the Nimbus Cluster which is comparatively far away. We have to have new instructions and tasks planned out days in advance because of the comm lag.
