Major salarian clan gets new batch

Kolos Township, SUR'KESH - A cadet branch of the prominent Linron family on Sur'Kesh gained 16 new members last Wednesday, as the eggs hatched without incident. The scandal-ridden dalatrass of the Linron clan was present at the hatching with the parents of the new clutch, but she refused to give comments to reporters present.

This and many other recent events are sure signs of recovery in the galaxy, two years after the conclusion of the Reaper wars.

Murder of Crows "And we shall descend on you like a murder of crows"
Is this what passes for celebrity news with the salarians? Dalatrass gets more cousins and disposable drones?

Yeah, this'd be a lot more interesting if they expanded on 'scandal-ridden'.

As it is, this is about as newsworthy as 'thresher maw eats fools on Tuchanka'.

"Large and important clan has new children, clear sign of galactic recovery". Sure.

Why is this even considered news in the first place? It's like saying "relative of Admiral Hackett gives birth to twins".

Maybe this one was pulled from News of the Galaxy?

Peaceful life and liking it that way.

Kage Still alive...whatever that means.
About the one meaningful facet I see here is whether this can prevent Linron's folk from losing whatever pull they have left with the Union.

This is just so typical. There's not even any indication of who it's by; the article is just *there*, unattributed. So we don't know who it is who has it in for Linron; they're like the salarian equivalent of a faceless assassin. You know, make the shot and fade back into the shadows. Only this isn't something designed to do new damage, it's supposed to keep the wound from healing instead. Something that will keep it open, keep the controversy going. And I know I'm, er, not the best to talk about that, but really it's not right, not with all the problems the galaxy has at the moment.

I'm betting this is from one of the rival families; I mean, it's probably not actually about the hatchings at all, it's to rub it in that Linron's in trouble, you know? "Something, something, Scandal-ridden Linron, something, something, refused comments". You see? This is how salarians play at inter-clan warfare. This isn't pointless news at all; there's a very real point to it and it's that someone back in the Basin is trying to force Linron out and keep her on the defensive, only it's being disguised as neutrality. And I think this is just so typical. Is anyone surprised? I mean, the people back home could just stop with all this interfering in our lives and each other's lives and get focused on helping the rest of us rebuild, but they won't.

Phraag is not pronounced "frog". It's not funny. I'm serious.

Dude! Since I moved to the Citadel it's like salarians are totally evil. Like, I didn't ever hear about this stuff back ho in boot. Now that I'm on the real shit though it's like, man, a lot of us are jerks!

It's the sort of thing that too many of the people back home just don't realize; they don't get how it looks to everyone else when they're always trying to undermine each other like this. They don't know what it's like out here. The humans, they're all caught up in Hackett's speeches, or in whatever "United For The Cause" appeal the turians are making. And as much as it stresses me out of my mind, you can see where they're coming from, you know? And all these antics back in the Basin, that just looks petty and selfish, and they're already on edge when it comes to the Union. Some of us have to live out here, and we don't need the humans even more paranoid about us. And they won't get the subtle hints the clans think they're so clever in making, because they don't understand it all - their family webs aren't as complex. So it just looks like the Union's leaders have their heads up their cloacae even more than they actually do.

I mean, they don't even understand why I haven't been back home in three years, so how are they going to get what the humans or the turians or the elcor think of it? And with all the resentment against us over here - there were two more assaults on the Citadel, you must have heard of that if you're here - they'll just make it harder to put this behind us. It's like no-one's learned anything. They're too smart for their own good, just too complicated and obsessed with the political details. The humans have a saying, you know, about not being able to see the forest because you're too focused on all the trees, and that's what's happening.

And they're going to turn everyone against them! Not just against Linron, whoever wrote this is going to just sour everyone on salarians in general! Look at how the headline uses the eggs as a threat: "new batch", uh-oh, Linron's minions still in power, more of them, is this what we want?, you know? They're not even born yet and already they're tools in the latest round of salariantics!

Phraag is not pronounced "frog". It's not funny. I'm serious.

Only two years after the war, and people are breeding already. Goodness, we'll be rebuilding houses next.

You think this was bad, you should consider the articles running in the aftermath of the war – you know, the stuff you have to do an archive dive to find, since they were printed right when the relays exploded. Whole swathes of inoffensive stuff by the more “Linron-friendly” Sur’kesh newsnets, quietly playing down the war and using a bunch of soft language about it – you know, downgrading the terminology wherever possible, talking about the “Fight” for Rannoch or the “Second Quarian War…”

Basically, a whole bunch of smooth language to remind people that everyone was too busy bickering to do anything, so we shouldn’t feel too bad about dragging our feet. Nice to have people like Nassoon Garot slapping down that holier-than-thou attitude.

Well, good for the family. New life is always something to celebrate. But what exactly does a "Cadet branch" mean?
Link Link Quote

asari_promiscuity
A branch of the clan/family descended from a lower-ranking sibling. How much weight it carries varies from clan to clan, as do the methods of determining which sibling of a clutch is considered politically 'senior' - some still hold to 'first hatched' even today, which seems a bit random all things considered, although having once sat in on a round of the committee meetings my own clan uses to determine and periodically reassess primogeniture, I can see the appeal of just having the decision be made once and for all and done with, even if it is essentially the throw of a die.

I wish it were that simple. No, it’s decided on a freak show of different criteria, including financial status, pedigree, education, leadership, contributions, fraction of the clan that is directly yours, fraction of the clan that is most loyal to you (they overlap a lot less than you think), relations to other clans, relations with your competition, and of course, how many [IDIOMATIC TRANSLATION: skeletons you have in your closet]. Seniority only figures in so much anymore.

It’s the reason that contracts are a political mess, with lawyers watching your every move, and the reason I’m quietly glad I’m a male. Sure, I’ll never have any real power, but I’m fairly sure it’s driven every backstabbing sister of mine insane.

Anyway, yeah. A “Cadet” Branch would be, uh (to use a human term) the dukes, counts, etc. and their families. In this case, I’m guessing it’s a mid-to-low rung on the clan, though I’d say the fact that she even bothers at that rank is a point in her favor.

man, and I thought human politics was already hard to grasp and then comes these byzantine matriarchal schemes you salarians have.
