Crime Spikes in Earth's Unorganized Areas.
Alan Vurst, DW Intergalaktischen. For more than a year now, the governments of Earth have relinquished their authority over their regions, giving their place to the transitional government of the System's Allinace. The SA and it's controvertial rule over the human homeworld, as part of the swift recovery program, have reorganized the geopolitical makeup of Earth as the needs saw fit. Even after a year though, many uninhabited and sparsely inhabited areas have remained unorganised, with no military official responsible for neither local recovery or peacekeeping. This has given the opportunity for numerous criminals, gangs and other petty outlaws to find refuge deep in locations -like the Siberian Tundra, Central Asian Steppes, Central Africa and the Pacific Ocean- to set up their dens, organise themselves and send waves of looters, raiders and all kinds of criminals to isolated settlements and cause chaos. "They robbed the bank, the shops, they break into houses! And worst of all, they have guns! With the entire military might of the galaxy being here a year ago, no wonder these rascals have guns!" Says a citizen of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. "With the gold mines shut down for centuries, our only source of income was tourism. And now we have nothing. We are alone and forgotten but help isn't coming! There have been rapes for god's sake!" Says Maria, a woman living in La Rinconada, Peru. Alliance officials are claiming to have looked into the problem and are promising a quick solution, which will involve the creation of new districts as well as the organization of aerial patrols to remote locations. But as crime levels stay at a steady level in these forgotten areas, the only thing the people can do is wait for an end to be put to their struggles. We are doing the best we can with the time and resources currently available. It is one of our goals to leave no citizen unassisted. But to ensure maximum efficiency in its recovery efforts and continue to exceed estimates each and every passing quarter of the year, the Alliance needs to prioritize. Economical centers, densely populated urban areas, power supply and infrastructure need to be brought back up and running first. Those people's pleas have been heard and, as stated, help will soon arrive as we've already have solutions planned and awaiting execution. We all need to be patient and hopeful. We're nearing two years since the end of the war but we still need to stay strong. Help us to help you, and we can all soon return to our old lives.
Walk on with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone. |

...are you shitting me?
'there's been rape' yeah rape is bad, but you know what? Before the war in civilised, stable countries rape still happened. it often happened with alarming frequency because it's a crime that is not always reported. We are doing the best we can. Earth is a mess at the moment. The Alliance is rebuilding cities. The Alliance is stabilizing countries that have never actually been stable in the first place. The Alliance is pissing off a dozen colonies to get Earth the help it needs. Of course there's crime. There's always crime. And in the post-war world, there is more crime because every military and police force in the galaxy got smashed during the war attempting to protect civilians. ...all other arguments about the bias and gross assault upon higher thinking inherent in the article aside I would like to take a moment to address a certain, rather nauseating, piece of absolute bullshit.
Bullshit, Like SoThis has given the opportunity for numerous criminals, gangs and other petty outlaws to find refuge deep in locations -like the Siberian Tundra, Central Asian Steppes, Central Africa and the Pacific Ocean- to set up their dens, organise themselves and send waves of looters, raiders and all kinds of criminals to isolated settlements and cause chaos.
Firstly, we're talking about a notoriously hostile region with sparse populations, factors which I imagine the godmachines stomping all over the planet have failed to improve. This, above all, does not at all lend themselves to being substantial bases for any kind of organized criminal endeavor. They're geographically isolated. Have and had little in the way of organized infrastructure (as the article takes great pains to point out). Secondly what, pray tell, would encourage an individual to migrate away from the more settled, heated, watered, and powered areas of their respective continents to deserted islands and the Siberian tundra; all so that they can go pit themselves against an organization who has taken a rather dim view of any significant criminal enterprises in recent months. There is, quite simply, no money in it, no material profit, and it drastically reduces your life expectancy. Frankly I'm just going to chalk this one up to either "journalistic idiocy" or... actually there is no "or". yeah...that came out wrong. Rape is a serious issue. I din't mean to belittle it. What I'm belittling is the stupidity of this article. Rape is a major issue that has a lot of complex, social causes. It happens in stable, first world countries. 1 in 6 or even 1 in 3 human women will experience sexual assault or rape, often from men they know-and that's fucking wrong. One of the reasons women join the Alliance is because it doesn't have the same culture of 'shut up about it' that some Earth militaries did have. But it happens. This is using it as this thing that has never happened before like-'oh my god things have deteriorated so much people are being raped', when it was a significant social issue even in stable countries. Rape happens regardless of how many soldiers or police are around because there is social pressure not to speak up about it and because there are some people who believe they have a right to other people's bodies. Many of these people raping would have raped anyway-chaos is merely giving them a chance to do it openly and I sincerely hope that the perpetrators will be caught and sentenced. I apologise to anyone who took that as me dismissing rape. I honestly believe rape is worse than murder. First Sergeant Natalie King, 2/4th Marines |

Um... maybe I'm just new to this whole extranet news thing, but why is a supposedly major label listing largely 'unpopulated' areas of the world as just 'unorganized'? Are they getting bored of reporting progress on the salvage and restoration efforts going on, running out of relevant things to report, or has this agency been bribed to spew some kind of propaganda to advertise SATAE as being wasteful of resources? It's not like they can't easily do better with satellites than this article is suggesting they're trying to do with patrols.

Well I for one think that the establishment of organized raiders on areas of Earth is newsworthy and worrying.

Hey we could discuss it on the lounge or something, but I personally strongly refuse to believe that the rape statistics will stay stagnant from now to centuries in the future, that nothing can and will be done to curb it. It's just too bleak, and the ME future is supposed to be optimistic (pre reapers).
However mentioning an endemic return of rape in the post war era would make sense. |

SA has still quite a strong military might, at least compared to these raiders. Occupy the areas -> but a permanent end to any unrest.

Except that it's neither because the problem does not, can not, actually exist; at least not in the scope, scale, locations, and intensity that this article purports. It is, again, utter bullshit, tossed out with a handful of emotionally charged words for the sake of scoring a few extra pings. Not a good plan. Earth history, especially the last two centuries had a lot of intervention campaigns that went FUBAR inspite of significantly superior military power. The last thing the Alliance military can afford is to get itself bogged down in a guerrilla war in some inhospitable part of Earth. For the time being, I think we are going to have to live with a few warlords and gangs carving out their own fiefdoms in the wrecked areas of the planet. Rep. For the time being, I think we are going to have to live with a few warlords and gangs carving out their own fiefdoms in the wrecked areas of the planet. Eugh. First off, again, calling them "warlords" may be a touch too charitable considering that they are, at best, extremely localized in the problems they pose and have a ludicrously tiny (read virtually nonexistent) sphere of any actual influence. Secondly, I think you fail to grasp how hilariously wide the gap between the modernized Alliance military and the best that your hypothetical warlords can scrounge up. SAMC has orbital superiority, interatmospheric capable craft, standardized kinetic barriers, cutting edge and source controlled accelerator weaponry, and numbers. And what, pray tell, do criminal elements in isolated and hostile parts of the globe has that trumps that besides a record of pseudo victories in unrelated brushfire wars against regional militaries? And if they become a problem we'll deal with them. No reason to go chasing after small fry when there's a lot bigger issues floating around.

What do they have? Sir, I will tell you what they have. They have moxie (unrelated to the horrible animal native to Palaven) they have grit (probably even covered in it!) and they have loads and loads of pluck! is pluck an actual word for this? I have no idea that is what they have my scarred friend |

Well, at Torfan they had moxie, pluck, and grit, andnd a lot better organization, structure, and weaponry than some trash heap criminals. We downright ripped those guys a new asshole three times over. And honestly there are days where I wouldn't mind a fight like that again.
So please, they are more than welcome to go ahead and try. They're gonna learn that day. ![]() |

Earth has areas that are anarchy-ridden shitholes. There's a fuckin' newsflash. I spent nine months after the war slogging through a number of those cesspools.
...I don't talk about it much. There are sickos down there who see a pregnant turian lady all by herself with her belongings on her back and decide it's a great time to see what it's like to screw a turian. In the absence of local cops can you really blame me for what happened to them? I didn't hang around stretching it out or anything. My daughter is alive. Funny, I do feel guilt over the bombing that sent me to prison, but I don't feel any damn guilt at all for what I did to keep my daughter safe on Earth. ...Someone tell me how to be one of those mercs who thinks that every hell he walks through, every life he takes is a big kick. I'unno it's not that fucking complex. Like, you get paid, you do your job, you fuck around whenever you've got some off time an then you do it again. So really I guess the answer is that you're not getting paid enough. ![]() |
