She slid the screen door shut as she stepped into the one room flat she had the fortune to call home. It was long past midnight by the time she'd finished, and she'd been groped by not four but five different customers this evening. Drunks, mostly. They only saw her for her race, a race of strippers, a race of whores, a race of easy women. Nevermind that she was a former huntress. Nevermind that she specifically didn't dress in those kinds of clothing. She was asari, she must be what the stereotype was.

She pulled up a chair and sat, looking out the window. The buildings here weren't as tall as on Thessia or Illium, but their towers grasped at the sky like fingers reaching but never touching. No population center was untouched by the war, and this was no different. At one point, this city may have housed twenty million people, now it was barely pushing half that number. While most of the residents were human, there were smatterings of other races she saw when she walked. Some came to hear her play at the bar. Some just came to get drunk. She was getting known, but slowly.

She pulled the acoustic guitar up and gave it a few strums.

"Move!"

Explosions rocked the ground as she ran. The Reaper's horn reverberated as a wave of Cannibals and Marauders landed on the ridge. A warp managed to weaken the shields of the marauder enough for T'Loras's pistol to pick it off. She rolled into cover next to a human biotic.

"They're everywhere! I don't know how long we can hold them off!" The human yelled out to her, his voice barely heard over the gunfire.

"We'll hold them off as long as we can, soldier.... And that's a little bit longer..." She stood up and flared out with another warp, met with the human's throw.... The explosion took out a few husks and a cannibal, then she fired her Hornet to take out some more.

She closed her eyes as she sang, a tear falling.

Dragon's teeth, it always came back to those. The fallen weren't killed right away, they were carried. Impaled. The Reapers had an ever-expanding army because they could just convert more. They wouldn't convert her. She wouldn't let them. She held the rocket launcher at her shoulder. She knew what she had to do....

But wait... that was Salana on the spike. She was alive still... she could be saved... No. Orders were clear. She had to do this, even if it meant the death of a teammate. Salana was already dead anyway.

She fired the rocket....

Memories were fickle things. In her head... she got lost in them.... She sang, and they came out.... the emotion came out.

The Rocket struck true... and as the explosion came, a different explosion came along with it. Blue, ever-expanding. It washed over her and the entire battlefield.... and the Reapers... the husks... they began to leave....

Knowing what she knows now... if she had only hesitated... for a single moment.... there was a chance....

"I'm... sorry.... Salara...."

Madira Pax cried for a lost friend.
