New Esiv Named in Khaljah

Chorok As’abak - Khar’Shan News Network

Following a shocking announcement by Esiv Kirna Seshat last week, the Has’mun of Khaljah enacted a rare circumstance in their religious doctrine, and disappeared into sessions of extended isolation from the rest of the world, as they individually meditated on the choice for a new Esiv to guide them.

Their choice? Elder Aranu Livn’et, of the Petetesh Monastery.

The Elder, who, according to traditions, takes no vows or oaths of office upon ascending to Esiv (and adopts the shame of losing his family name), is popular with the lower castes, having entered the religious caste after being inspired to make pilgrimage to Khaljah by a chance meeting with an Esahi in his home country of Nalkesh. Prior to the encounter, Esiv Aranu had been a Tier 6 member of the lower merchant’s caste.

The announcement comes with relief to many of all castes, some of whom were silently preparing for caste splits and intra-tier arguments over the choice of successor to the much-beloved moderation of Esiv Kirna. Pudits outside of Khaljah say little is expected to change overall, as both Esiv Kirna and her successor are known for their similar interpretations of the Mantras, and that fears of a caste split are unfounded.

Esiv Aranu will officially replace Esiv Kirna next week. In the meantime, Petetesh Monastery will prepare itself as the new center of Faith for the followers of the Abiy’an Tar’isia.

I am glad they have found a successor now, and one that should keep the clergy and the castes in line.

May Aranu serve his people with the same wisdom and guidance as his predecessors before him.

Further reading required on: specific duties and trappings of the Esiv; succession rites for same.

This one is following the story as best it can; dispatches from Khar'Shan are given low priority by most aboard the vessel. That strikes this one as an oddity, given the transparent spirituality with which the batarians known to this one conduct themselves. Perhaps this one will raise the issue at tonight's Shoaling.

This one finds itself increasingly eager to at some point visit Khar'Shan. The world seems a beacon of Enkindlement and faith!

I believe there is a member of the clergy who posts in this forum, and one more informed about the process than I. Though I will try to explain to the best of my ability.

Traditionally, Esiv, which is also translated as "Elder of Elders", is the head of the Hasu'man, more or less, whoever holds the title of Esiv stands upon the highest of Kalnekh and among the religious caste. That was the traditional role anyway, with the rise of the Ascendancy the Esiv has now taken upon responsibilities akin to a head of state, as well as representing Khar'shan on the Confederation. Whenever the Esiv has passed away, the Hasu'man will host an election to nominate his or her successor.

By tradition, the office of Esiv is a lifetime position. But Aranu's predecessor Kirna stepped down recently due to failing health. My guess is, she wanted to ensure that her successor could be nominated without incident. As it seems to be the case here.

As for your intention to visit Khar'shan, I will warn you, it is not entirely safe these days.

This one thanks the other for its explanation. This one has interacted with the board member this one believes the other refers to, and has found her a most eloquent and inspiring being. Indeed, this one has exchanged religious queries with the other in question, an occurrence it hopes will be repeated! This one was wary of troubling the honoured other with a message, though, as it hasn't encountered her here for some days. This one must assume the honoured other's spiritual duties keep her occupied!

This one extends its gratitude again for the insight. So many traditions and perspectives to take into account; this one feels almost overwhelmed at times. How it wishes it had the drell capacity for perfect recall!

Well, on the surface of it, that's gone as well as can be hoped for, really. Minimal disruption and the castes not immediately demanding to replace the Esiv with their own candidate. Whether or not Aranu sticks with his reputation as a follower of Kirna's kind of Esiv remains to be seen, though, and I imagine that could be cause for a lot of trouble down the way if he does.

I..what is the term? 'Lurk'?

More often than I post, at the very least. I find Observing most discussions here interesting, and hesitate to interfere, even if nothing else occupies my time.

On topic, Mr. Gaelak has explained as much as I would be allowed to speak of regarding duties and successions- there are a few more nuances to both, and as for trappings, we are a simple caste, from lowest tier to highest we are often garbed and carry the same - robes, chimes, and Mantras. The Esiv gets a headdress and a couple more jeweled accessories to their robe, but there is hardly anything more extravagant than that - and such things would be inappropriate, considering the state of the Ascendancy, so even those might be forsaken.

You have much to learn about our people, human.

This one must respectfully disagree with you on that. The existence of a theocracy does not necessarily indicate the existence of faith.

To clarify, this one is not arguing that the people of Khar'shan do not have faith, but merely that the nature of their government does not prove that they do.

For all the facile explanations we offer, the truth remains.

I demand the Esiv is replaced by my own candidate.
