The moment had almost arrived.

He held his bag tightly, fairly quivering with the intensity of the greatest excitement he'd ever known. Nothing in his young life could have prepared him for this; yet simultaneously every moment of his life had been leading up to it. True immersion in the Many Voices awaited!

The Learned Tathissyl had cautioned him against over-enthusiasm and haste, trying to impress upon the young acolyte the importance of caution. Eventually she had given up, accepting that no amount of lecturing was going to dampen Laykalar's excitement. Trying to prepare him was pointless; he'd worked himself up into a flurry of eager anticipation and wonder, and really the only way to bring him out of it would be to let him indulge. Nonetheless, she'd insisted he wait aboard for half a local day after initial docking, a condition he'd accepted with all due regard for their respective intellectual stations. The Greater Encompassing hadn't been priority traffic, and convincing the Citadel that a private vessel of unaffiliated scholars and pilgrims should take up space in the station's docks for any length of time took the elder hanar a fair amount of negotiation. Apparently the vessel would be providing services to station residents - the nature of these services escaped Laykalar, who hadn't been involved in the discussion. He didn't mind. His was not the calling of leadership but of immersion, discovery and pursuit of greater understanding. And soon it would truly begin!

His studies of the CDN board and its myriad inhabitants had been the first breaking wave; now the swell would be upon him, and he knew that in the coming days his life would change beyond imagination. He only had a few hours, of course; the elders had insisted upon what amounted to a curfew. But of course he'd need "down time" to reflect on all that he would learn and experience on the station.

One irrepressible bundle of hanar was about to hit the Citadel. Truly was this a day to remember.
