[Alliance]First elections in the System Alliance since the reaper war to be held in Athens
Krishna Tram – Alliance News Network

System Alliance spokesperson Tam Percin made an official declaration yesterday evening, announcing that test elections would be held in Athens in one month.

“The Alliance is well aware that many of its citizens are concerned about the five years plan never actually ending, and want their voting power back. This is the first step toward that goal. In three months, the citizens of Athens will choose their mayor.”

The choice of city of Athens, Greece, is not random, since human democracy is believed to have originated there.
“We will try a new unified voting system. If it works, more elections will be organized so people can choose their mayors, then as the System Alliance passes the reign of powers, prefects and presidents will be chosen before the five years mark.”

The declaration was met with approval, although critics said that it was nothing more than a delaying technique. Mr Percin went on to describe the system.

“To implement this, and make the best of this opportunity to start from scratch, we have benefited from the expertise of Asari consultants. The asari people have lived for thousands of years in an e-democracy, and have kept updating their system all along. Their input will be vital in areas such as security and fluidity of use. Voting is the most important thing a citizen can do, so we can only accept the best technologies.”

This declaration was met with mixed feelings. Many people expressed shock at the idea that aliens were consulted in remodeling the core systems of democracy. Isolationist parties have threatened to protest what they qualify as “selling out the heart of Humanity to the alien agenda”.
At press time three political parties had registered for the race.

That's quite a surprise move. I never thought our voting technology could be a subject to export.
But then, I say good move, humans. If you are going to set up this whole election thing anew then you should get the best technology available!:)
I can't follow the argument where that technology is supposed to be part of an alien agenda. it's not that the votes are redirected to Thessia and back. Isn't it?

I'm assuming they mean that the asari consultants will pepper the voting booths with bugs so that you guys can control us. As if your sex powers weren't enough :(

Anyway I'm really glad to read that, I hope it will give more patience to the separatists. They've been pretty trigger happy lately.

In other news we're bringing pederasty back because yay eurocentric nostalgia. Fucking hell, could they be any less subtle about it?

No. This is stupid. This is beyond stupid. This is offensively retarded since this defeats the whole point of temporary centralization.

I'm sorry I was under the impression that we were trying to accomplish things before the turn of the next century.
Isolationist parties have threatened to protest what they qualify as “selling out the heart of Humanity to the alien agenda”.
Ah yes allow us to reduce the multitude of people who take issue with whatever the fuck this is to "backwards inbred isolationists who are taking time out of their busy busy schedule of sisterhumping to protest about 'dem aliens'".

done.

Miralatriarch Just because I'm likely far older than you doesn't mean I know better.
It may be a biased viewpoint, but I don't see any reason why humans shouldn't start their own e-democracy. It certainly hasn't done us any harm.

Those of you who would counter with the example of Thessia during the war should be reminded that the various organisational blunders there weren't caused by the system itself. Rather, that situation came about through our reluctance to share everything we had, paired with our longevity; these led respectively to delusions of superiority and the much-vaunted "asari patience", which itself bred an inability to react to any change in galactic climate given less than fifty years' notice.

Be silent, maiden, you'll tip them off!

Ahem.

I think these isolationists give we aliens far too much credit. What makes them think we could ever agree on anything even vaguely resembling an agenda?
Even simple things like "let's not get killed" during the Reaper war eventually devolved into bickering over exactly how to go about doing that.

Well that's ridiculous - our sex powers are absolutely enough, anyone who suggests we need artificial means to further increase our control is insulting us.

Seriously though (this towards the article, not you Michelle), where is there an 'agenda'? From the sound of it, it's simply a matter of providing infrastructure to support a system of government that - as the article notes - Earth came up with very well on its own. These consultants are hardly pushing for a Republican model, if there's to be mayors and presidents and all that - it's just a form of democracy that, while different form our own, can benefit from the same technologies to help it run smoothly.

If you can't see the problem with a premature, unified voting system on a very...uh, independent world, I don't know what to say to you.

I'll restrain myself to a couple of points here:

1, bureaucratic nightmare that defeats the purpose of martial law
2, we have three years left to fix up Earth and reinstate the nations so this stuff is just a waste of time and will tie up even more resources through said bureaucratic nightmare
3, said nations still exist to their people, who won't be too impressed by a únified' system. What does that even mean? Who's going to apply it? Who's going to monitor it?

There's a lot of reasons to be disapproving or at least sceptical.

I don't want a president of Australia. Every country has a unique government, painting it over like this just gives credence to the claim we're 'destroying culture'or whatever the fuck that means.

Oh, wow, they're actually doing this. Wow.

Geeze, I would've thought the bigger issue would've been the entire 'SATAE's plan, in its own words, is to abolish local sovereignty and impose foreign systems of government while consolidating its power and claim that this is keeping to the letter or spirit of the five year plan'.

You had a nice run as a galactic power Humanity, I hope you take the fall with grace.

Fine fine fine.

I feel like its a bit premature to start divvying up SAN battlegroups and SAMC divisions and colony worlds and all that but I really just want to beat the rush on this you know?

Well, as SATAE did just declare that they're going to be instituting hegemonic SA rule via the five year plan I have a feeling they'll be doing that just fine on their own.

I just wish to point out that when the System Alliance talks about an 'unified voting system' they mean a single voting system (so how you vote,) not a singular government (what you vote for.) Australians will have an Australian in charge, with their queen, and the UNAS one of their own and so on.

We are committed to restoring the nation-states to their prior status as independent powers. But we do want a solid system to allow this to happen. Voting for the new government of the different states seems preferable to the Alliance just appoint one. Similarly by adopting an asari system over those found on Earth before the Reapers we sidestep of seeming to chose a system of one state over the other.

It is not ideal, but it is the best we have come up with, and it beats anarchy.

How dare you take away Australia's right to have a hilariously complicated system of voting :|

No one's saying that it's a centralized government, but how's it going to work? What about when the Plan ends? Centralized stuff won't last beyond the Plan and everyone knows it.

Not all voting systems in democratic nations are equal. Not all nations are even democracies. To try and basically tag them with the system while they're not looking is fundamentally dishonest, grossly outside the SA's mandate, and hilariously paternalistic.
Voting for the new government of the different states seems preferable to the Alliance just appoint one.
There is a middle ground here. Preferably one in which a SATAE engages in discourse with surviving and emergent regional leaders and surviving officials to determine what type of system is preferred and what is required to bring it about. The SA brings individuals from the given regions, specialists and analysts, and resources people from that region bring social, political, and cultural viewpoints plus a more intimate knowledge of what actually needs to be done and we can all skip this macro-scale governments by the batch shit.

OK, so I don't actually give a shit about how you furheads structure yourselves but when people propose stuff like this^ and call it a democracy I get pissed off.

You know what democracy is? It's not getting opinions from half-a-dozen bigwigs and saying "they want x, so we'll give them x." No, it's listening to every single person in the Republic and letting them figure it out themselves.

Tides, no wonder you people need Republican consultants. If you're seriously saying "we'll give these people the vote, but not those people over there", you're doing it wrong. If these other government systems are so great, let the people vote for them, y'know?

Who, pray tell, said anything about that being a democracy? SATAE's directive is not to spread democracy, it is to enact a restoration of something even barely approaching pre-War levels of industrialization and agricultural production. To attempt to force a democracy on shattered regions because clearly that is what's best for them is the exact same breed of arrogance you're so decrying just prettied up a bit.

You know what democracy is? It's not getting opinions from half-a-dozen bigwigs and saying "they want x, so we'll give them x." No, it's listening to every single person in the Republic and letting them figure it out themselves.

Frankly, not everyone wants a total democracy.

Frankly, instituting a total democracy in any number of previously well administrated and well developed regions would be utterly disastrous.

If the decision reached between all reasonably included factions is for a theocracy, or a monarchy, or communist bloc, then all power too them SATAE'll help them establish the best theocracy, monarchy, or communist bloc they can in order to help the most people possible.

Tides, no wonder you people need Republican consultants. If you're seriously saying "we'll give these people the vote, but not those people over there", you're doing it wrong. If these other government systems are so great, let the people vote for them, y'know?
At the risk of beating an already dead concept into a fine jellied smear, that's really not SATAE's concern.

SATAE's concern is there being a nation standing in two years and change that can actually persist on its own.

So this is what all the fuss was about. I am not part of the department handling this transaction but I have seen so many representatives from the republics here lately.

This is a big matter of trust, we haven’t been approached about something similar in this scale before in history. I know our consultants take this very seriously and will do their best to live up to the expectations.

The interface could literally punch the users in the groin after draining their bank accounts and infecting them with Ebola and it would still be considered an unmitigated success so low are the expectations here.

So it goes without saying that it will be impressive seeing how the Republics spin this away when it all inevitably goes even more to shit.

Well, some of you seem quite eager to abandon democracy right away. I think there are no laws prohibiting a vote against further votes? Repeat that once for each generation and have your go at it.
