The Gathering Storm
Which is more frightening, dark or light?

In the dark your mind may paint yourself a thousand lovely sights, your worst nightmares could be just around the corner, under the bed, within the walls. Watching, waiting, whispering.

But it was an easy spell to undo, all you had to do, after all, was turn on the light.

But what do you do when your dreams are standing before you, flesh given form, in the cold, clear, radiance of the sun?

When Nikolai stepped out of the maintenance shaft, a few close steps behind Canius, he was just a form in a drab, filth streaked, NBC. In the time between being sighted, and fingers squeezing on triggers. In the time between harsh, barked orders and the air filling with hyperaccelerated shards of metal, there was a flash of silver and something else cut its way out of the suit.

It was moving low. Moving fast. Flickering in and out of existence even as the massive turian ahead simply vanished.

But not so quickly as the gangsters watching couldn't see what it was. Or rather, what it was not. The lower half of its, his, face was saurian, mechanical, and yet unerringly, uncomfortably sleek. That wasn't so bad, just a gasmask, a tad dehumanizing yes but Omega, everyone had seen something more uncanny on their way to the corner store.

But there was no upper half to that face.

Just shifting geometric panes. Hard light. Broken light. Constellations on their endlessly circling tract, spinning and spiraling where eyes, where ears, where a brow and soft human flesh should be.

Israa immediately swiveled to the sniper, shotgun blasting holes in the arcology walls. "We've been compromised! Keep moving!" She kept firing until the heat sink gave out. With a smooth operation of the pump, she released the overheated piece of metal, inserting another.

She swept herself from cover, sprinting across their field of fire, hopefully keeping them suppressed for the time being.

Unfortunately for Israa, this did not go as planned. The sniper, by virtue of being competent, had chosen a choice railing as cover, and a single cackle could be heard from her as the sign for Mirak's Weeapons came crashing down below her.

"SIC 'IM, KREYK!"

That was the point at which Kirok heard a single grunt of laughter. As he turned, he saw what had to be the largest krogan this side of the terminus - nine feet tall, easily a thousand pounds in full armor, save for the horned helmet sitting atop his sledgehammer instead of on his head where it belonged - charge at him with the momentum of a mile-long freight train.

Kirok, reeling from the sniper shot, did the only thing he could.

He got violent.

Roaring from his gut like a freight train on PCP, he brought out his shotgun bayonet first and charged the krogan coming for him. So what if the dude had a hammer? Kirok had a gun. Hell, he had a Claymore M-300. That was more gun than most guns had.

Ducking underneath the hammer's swing, he brought the butt of the shotgun into the other krogan's face, and then forcibly rammed the shotgun barrel down the krogan's open mouth as he twirled in sudden confusion.

"I! AM! KROGAN!" Kirok shouted, staring straight into the other krogan's eyes as he started to pull the trigger, relishing the sudden tears he saw in his opponent's eyes.

The snipers were already a problem. And now they had a krogan. Kirok looked like he had that problem kind of pinned down, though. Mekan glanced at his HUD, trying to get a good bead on one of the enemy contacts he was detecting up high. If he could just...

He glanced at his OT.

Then at the sniper position up high.

His omnitool flared to life, blazing with fire.

"DEPLOYING INCINERATION TECH!"

The fireball soared through the air towards one of the snipers, and impacted, throwing up smoke and ash in an instant. The resulting damage to the surrounding area would be a problem. Mekan just hoped his team could compensate for the inevitable problems they'd suffer with their aim in the shootout; as long as he hit the guy, they would end this fast and get the mission over with.

"Uh, pirate lady-Miss Alfarsi, could you send the drone over here?" asked Gilgamesh as weapons fire rung out, "I think I can help with the snipers." It was simple enough, once he had a military grade warmech to piggyback off of. You used the targetting lasers, and a tiny bit of technical savvy to deal with safety cut ins, use the program on the Transgression to 'teach' the others. Basically every drone in the galaxy came with holoprojectors ow, and that was really all you needed. Just focus them, aim them, into the highly advanced, military grade, light amplifying scopes of the snipers all around...

And listen to the scream as they go blind.

Well, as long as they didn't shoot you while they did it.

The main problem with bringing up the rear was that when the attack came from the front, say because your krogan squadmate couldn't resist playing in the bubble wrap, you were out of the fight until you could get into position. Collar made the most of it - he provided covering fire as he moved up and then, with three distinct squads of enemies ahead, he tossed a small handful of flashbangs.

Collar
Over the years, through no fault of his own, Spiza had been subjected to at least a dozen firefights. They varied widely in danger, ranging from a simple barfight with a walking Tupari advertisement right up to crossing a Reaper-infested space station to save a mentor of his. Throughout them all, however, the same advice constantly came to mind: Pick your battles.

This was not his battle.

Not a seven-on-ten onslaught, where he'd already proven his uselessness. No, his specialty lay elsewhere - up at the shipment, figuring out just what the shrell this Group was planning. There was no need for him to stick around - especially if he was going to get between Kirok and his krogan, or between the batarians and their attack.

No, if he was going to help this group, he was going to stay the hell out of the way, just as Collar had put it, and do some shrell-damned recon.

It was for this exact reason that he darted forward, slipping past Kirok and his errant Jorgal, and shot the palm of his hand at a fuel canister the gang had left. His omnitool lit up like an orange inferno, and a blast of molten metal arced out and smashed into the canister before it even had a chance to form. It shot into the air, arcing into the assault squad before the salarian punched in the second command:

arcProjector.exe.

Coincidentally, this happened at the exact same time as the slaver threw out his concussive grenades.

By the time the smoke, fire and heat had cleared up, their enemies were not so much out as they were smears on the wall. The Engineer sighed, stood up...and simply leaned over the railing, shaking his head in disbelief.

There were just no words.

When the smoke cleared, Mekan just looked around at the damage, slightly shocked at the extent that Adar and Spiza had wrecked the everything. It may not have been coordinated, but the results were...well, results, to say the least.

"...Holy fuck, guys, do you think ya got 'em?"
Link Link Quote

Mekan of Omega
Spiza just continued shaking his head, observing the devastation..

"I just...Look, let's just go." He stood away from the railing, setting up a map on his omnitool to guide them. "We've got maybe ten minutes before someone outside figures out these guys didn't win, and I don't plan to be here when they realize that."
Link Link Quote

The_Sarcastic_Salarian
"Haw! Let'em come!" Kirok said as he slid a new heatsink into his massive shotgun. "If dis is th' best dey got t'muster, we'll finish 'em in no time! B'sides, I thought ya'll wanned t'be creepy an' shit. If'n there's a fight goin' on here, won't dat make it easier fer ya'll t'get in an' out? 'Sides, some of us specialize in... distractions."
Link Link Quote

Kirok
"Considering they got off a warning and then we blew up half of the arcology just now? I think we're looking at most of Juni heading straight for us right this minute. And honestly, if it wasn't for that fact, I'd ask if we could stop and take a breather." Mekan stretched his arm slightly; he was beginning to experience a few aches and pains in most of his organic muscles at this point. Climbing more than twenty floors at a hurried pace before engaging in a shootout was kind of exhausting, and even if he tried to keep from gaining weight since the war and the whole QoroQ debacle, it wasn't like he did fitness drills to keep in shape for combat purposes. He wasn't quite built for physical exertion like this.

The batarian looked over at Spiza before walking over to him and lowering his voice so the others couldn't hear him. "Hey. You doin' alright, man?" Spiza may have felt like he had to put on the 'cold special operative' persona, but that wouldn't stop Mekan from showing some concern for the frog.

After all, someone on the team had to be slightly less psychopathic than everyone else, and Gil was showing a scary aptitude for helping to kill people, for someone who 'didn't use guns.'
Link Link Quote

Mekan of Omega
Kirok watched as the whiny, talkative batarian went to talk to the 'mission leader.' Bunch of wet panties all around here. If Kirok was leading... well, if Kirok was leading, things would be a lot different.

For example, he wouldn't have left a 'stupid dumb krogan' alone with an I/O port on a technical reader.

Smirking slightly, the krogan pulled out an Isochip and casually walked over to the reader, sliding it underneath the housing just like he'd been taught.

"Awright, Ensemble," Kirok subvocalized into the mic pressing against his throat. "Th' package's been d'livered. Dat's all I kin do right now. Don't set of nothin' what'll get me noticed - just download some goodies we can sells later on. Over an' out."

Link Link Quote

Kirok
The voice he heard just before he cut the line was decidedly not Ensemble's.

"You got it, hon!" chirped - or rather, gargled the response. "Hey Jilly, Kirr-kirr actually did it--"

Spiza shook his head. "I've seen worse."

Though not because he'd caused it.

The arcology had seen worse, surprisingly enough, though that sentence didn't mean much when the entire arcology had been nearly leveled only three years ago. As it was, the bottom floor was a shambles. The entire floor was covered in glass, dust, and ice shards, a nearby garden's floor-wide kinetic barriers only just now flickering back into existence. Its inhabitants were long gone - thankfully, not because they'd been torn to shreds in the explosion, but becuase it turned out that Omegan children had an enviromentally-induced higher reaction time than most sentients this side of the galaxy. They had scarpered for the ducts the moment the air changed direction.

The same couldn't be said of the various bits of turian, asari and krogan goo pasting the walls of Floor

The_Sarcastic_Salarian
Looking around at the damage, Mekan had to agree with Spiza's analysis. He'd seen worse himself. Still, the salarian had that look in his face. That totally disbelieving expression that only came with 'holy shit, did I do that' moments like what Mekan had experienced down in the sewer, and on the Pequod, and several times during the Reaper attack on the Citadel.

He didn't like thinking about that last batch of such moments.

"Well...don't start beatin' yourself up over anything, alright? All you did was protect the team. Just...focus on that fact." Mekan gave the salarian a gentle, reassuring pat on the shoulder. He really didn't have a good way to phrase 'Don't worry about wallgreasing everyone' without making it sound like he was telling Spiza to feel alright about becoming a sociopath. And that kind of reassurance didn't sound like what the salarian needed at the moment.

"Let's get moving. The other gangs will definitely be on us soon. We don't have a lot of time. How do we get to that warehouse from here?"

Mekan of Omega
That was easy enough to point out. Beyond this hall, the warehouses lined up past the arcology's various docks, five to a dock, and they were already at the 235-level. From here, it was a straight shot to the building in question - all they had to do was cross a few security checkpoints, sneak into the warehouse, grab whatever was there, and dash off before the Omegans came flooding back in.

In theory, if they played their cards right, they could be in and out without a fight.

In theory.

The Gathering Storm
While the rest of the group stood around looking horrified at the destruction, Esarkhad Adar took a very different approach. He stood around looking... Not smugly satisfied, exactly. It was more a look of mild self-satisfaction. He could almost hear Goronak in his head, "Right tool for the right time."

This had definitely been the right tool.

That didn't change that this little band had walked into a firefight half-cocked and one-at-a-time. There was some serious training to be done between missions, assuming another was forthcoming, which of course assumed they survived this one. So far it was looking good more through dumb luck than anything else.

Even so, it was looking good, and no professional soldier would ever question providence.

"Alright, we have our objectives. Quit gawking and let's move out!" he barked, once again taking point and moving carefully down the street, rifle at the ready.
