Hey everyone, let me show you the new Slaves4Us project I've been working on, it's very cool, we're launching today. This announcement will be broadcasting thorough the terminus, but I wanted you guys to be among the first to see it!

Slaves4Us conglomerate presents...

"Sorry sir, but I'm afraid the city can't give you the money you need to rebuild your house anymore..."
"What? But why?"
"Well as you know we caught the man who destroyed it. And it turns out that the cost of jailing him are rather prohibitive for a small colony like us. Very sorry. There is just no other way"

Hello folks! My name is Bintar Ranak, executive for Slaves4Us, and I must ask you, how often did that happen? Don't we have a better way to handle our convicts?
Well now we have! At Slaves4Us we're starting a new and exiting program, the convict outreach. It's very simple, if you're from a Terminus colony, and have a convicted prisoner, give us a call! We'll come by and take him off your hand for the duration of his sentence for a cost going from a tenth of what you would normally pay to jail him, to absolutely nothing!

Indeed, our prices go down depending how long the sentence is, reaching 0 for a lifelong one. You can also get fabulous discount by using Slaves4Us services such as construction, entertainment, and much more!

While your convict is with us he'll work hard and learn a trade, and the value of order and discipline. Just imagine, those overpopulated prison becoming a transit for convicts until they get picked up for a new adventure, a new life! What you could do with the money saved! And to know that instead of rotting in a jail, that formerly lost citizen is helping the Galaxy somewhere in the stars.

Now for Q&A

"This is great Bintar, but how do you handle violent criminals? Don't you risk them getting lose?"

Excellent question! But you need to understand that the Convict Outreach Program is nothing new in its root, in the time of the Hegemony we would get manpower from the government all the time as criminals. What is new here is mostly the concept of non lifelong contracts, and the scale. Our methods to restrain and discipline them are honed and perfected.

"We do something like that in my colony. We call it community service"

Community service could look like what we do, but the truth is that law enforcement is rarely able to correctly put prisoners to work like we do. Those "services" often end up costing pretty much more than what the prisoners do save. We have a better expertise.

"Why stop with convicts? What about junkies, vagrants?"

We don't make your laws, but if you think that a few year of hard honest work would clean up the ones left out of your society and turn them into productive citizens, well we're happy to work with you on that.

"But how will our citizens be treated? We don't want to get paraplegics back!"

Worry not, it is in our interest to take care of the convicts you put in our care! Our construction incidents, for example, are below the Illium standards of safety!

"I'm sorry Bintar, but my millennias old cultural bias make me see that solution as unacceptable, unlike putting people to rot in a cage for years, and have them learn the trade of murder from other convicts."

Ho well, you can't convince them all! Hey, we're still all friends!

And the rest of you please contact us! Slaves4Us is present on the extranet! Don't hesitate to discreetly petition your colony leaders to consider it!

Maybe tomorow, you won't have to pay for criminals anymore.

Then I guess the only business for us here is me buying your last album ::)

Jemak said:I understanding correctly that you therefore only rent slaves instead of selling them?

Not exactly, Slaves4Us has divisions doing various work. Mine is construction job. It means that the slaves under my care, including the convicts, do rebuilding contracts under my supervision. We do a lot of contractor job.

AmbidextrousAmphibian is a recruit, not a customer. And right now he has a roof over his head, a meal in his stomach, and he's playing gigs. From what I understand his performance is satisfactory. So maybe he's not that stupid after all.
For obvious security reasons the customers contact me via private message.

PrayerForTheDamnedI think...that this idea is close to something good.

OK, hear me out. Rather than have some random slave company take over the criminals, what if we made to adjustment that rather than sitting in jail, criminals have to be indentured to their victims/victims families for the duration of their sentence. Slaves4Us could sell the collars to the justice system and maybe offer some advice for control techniques (the less evil techniques that is) to keep the new owners safe and in charge, while the police could just keep up checks to make sure abuse wasn't happening and maybe limiting some of the more degrading or dangerous types of occupations. What would this do?

Well for the victim, s/he gets retribution AND the benefit of whatever the criminal produces. For the justice system it reduces costs because they don't have to run the jails. For the criminals, they still get punishment, but their temporary masters actually have an incentive to have them learn job skills (as the better the skills of the criminal, the more money the victim can make off of him/her) while at the same time keeping them out of an environment of being surrounded by other violent criminals who reinforce the behavior.

Isn't this better than throwing all the offenders together in cages?

I thought the slaver's idea was about as offensively stupid and morally bankrupt as the thread would get, but then I ran across this post.

You can not justify slavery. Not matter how much our prison system fails, slavery is going to be disgusting to my culture. No african will ever see slavery as justified. Prison may lead to repeated offenses, a huge drain on our budget, disguting condiotions but at least they are being kept alive. Justice may ask for an eye for an eye, give those who cause crime a equally horrific fate such as slavery, but civilations have laws to stop that. We may strip away their freedom to commit crime, but we do not restrict their basic sentient rights.

Hm. There's a slim chance that I could find a use for your services. Perhaps the threat of being added to your stable of stock would keep my rivals from interfering with family outings.

Reb'kah of Astrala here, to answer some questions:

Yes, there are colonies where prison systems are very difficult to build, operate, and staff--particularly in colonies that are both financially poor and technologically backward. We have no money to hire offworlders to mind our convicts and insufficient manpower to babysit them when there are crops that need harvesting, roofs that need repairing, and so on and so forth.

Fortunately, rope is cheap, so North Solregit's never had much need for prisons.

Miss Burke, miss Doran, thank you for your feedback, but could you please provide more details with your reservations on this project?

Thank you Sunrises for this detailed opinion! However I'm confused, it's more moral for you to just kill them? How about least critical crimes, but still deserving of detention, like theft? Also, what happens in case of judicial error? If you let us handle your life convict (for free by the way!) and find out they're actually innocent, for a modest retraction fee we'll be happy to bring them back. Can the rope say as much?
