Bioengineered Fungus Discovered Growing in Noveria Wilderness

Port Hanshan, Noveria – Pickal Topographics reports that AT-CCAEF-0143, a genetically altered fungus colloquially called “AzuMold,” has established a colony 43 kilometers north of Port Hanshan. AzuMold was developed by the AzuTech Corporation as a levo-amino food source that could grow in the harsh climate of Noveria. The fungus was initially used to supplement the planet’s food supplies during the Year of Isolation, but was found to be lethal to non-krogan and asari upon consumption. Its use has since been discontinued.

“Our satellites noticed a large blue patch of ground we hadn’t seen before,” said Vor Malu, a geological administrator at Pickal. “We sent a team in to investigate, and found the ‘Mold. Our biologists aren’t sure how it got out there yet, but based on its current size and growth rate, it’s at least two months old.” Large portions of the fungal patch are currently covered with snow, but Pickal scientists estimate a coverage of 750 hectares. In an official statement, the NDC reassured Noverian investors that the fungus is completely harmless if left uneaten, and should pose no threat to Port Hanshan corporations or their employees. AzuTech declined to comment upon this story.

I highly doupt that the galaxy will be under threat of being plainly consumed but still. It's a pretty impressive expansion rate so not really sure what to think of this.

Well it was designed to grow on noveria, but still if this stuff isn't handled carefully it could cause ecological desasters like on Pragia.
I hope the noverian athorities can contain that patch, I'ld hate to see what this stuff can do to in a less hostile enviroment.

Interesting. Could have applications in weapons systems. With further refinement. Growth rate is admirable. Small amounts in modded ammunition. Makes even a non-kill first shot fatal, could pierce and overgrow bunkers or armored vehicles. I would hope they don't simply burn it all.

I just had the thought cross my mind, but if Krogan can eat this particular fungus with no ill-effects then why not introduce it to Tuchanka? Surely if it can survive on Noveria it can survive there, and it would provide an extra food source for the Krogan...

But wouldn't it hurt the local wildlife on Tuchanka? Varren, Pyjaks, that sort of thing? Or do they have that same resistance?

If the local wildlife has survived Tuchanka, I think they can survive some fungus.

Introducing exotic species without extensive testing is never a good idea. Tuchanka's ecosystems are dangerous and may not be the most supporting of sapient life, but thousands of years of evolution brought them to an equilibrium state. Adding an untested fungus could be horribly disruptive.

Maybe it'll kill pyjacks...then again, they could probably eat it just fine, and then we'd have even more of the damned things, nobody wants that.
