Salarian Shot By Police In Terror Scare
Union Commissioner Threatens Legal Action

Days of protest and unrest focused on Nos Astra’s pro-reform salarian population reached a flashpoint today in a fatal shooting in the course of a terrorism-related police pursuit.

Illium native Olir Welus was shot dead by members of NAPD Task Force Redoubt in the forecourt of Scarletwood maglev station, but in a tragic turn of events, may have been innocent of involvement in the terrorist activity officers were racing to prevent.

The NAPD is reviewing all evidence and interviews of witnesses and officers are ongoing, but Justice Directorate this afternoon released a statement indicating that a “credible threat” was identified late the following evening of an attack on the city’s central maglev terminal Goddess Gate, two stations beyond Scarletwood, and that Welus’s interception was the result of a “strong identification” of threat factors by officers on the scene. The statement concludes: “While Justice Directorate will not comment on an ongoing investigation, the possibility of such identifications proving erroneous is an inescapable drawback of proactive law enforcement, and NAPD is vigilant in minimising any risk to the public.”

Vosari Negavit, head of the Salarian Union high commission on Illium, made no such efforts to moderate his official response:

“Welus was by all accounts a peaceful and law-abiding citizen, a second-generation Illian, and Olir clan is staunchly loyal to the Union. The NAPD and their Eclipse thugs simply saw a salarian, jumped to a paranoid conclusion, and rushed into a situation where they felt justified in murdering an innocent man for the ‘crime’ of fleeing a team of heavily-armed and unidentified aggressors, which is what any sane person would do.”

Eclipse issued a brief statement denying that any of its members were involved in the incident, but Justice Directorate’s press release announcing Task Force Redoubt following the Entish bombing touted the experience and insight of ex-Eclipse officers, transferred during the company’s temporary wartime nationalisation, being included in the task force. Many direct witnesses to the incident remain unavailable for comment due to NAPD interviewing, but others who were near the scene have given an unclear picture of whether the pursuing NAPD officers were uniformed and/or had announced themselves at the time of the shooting.

Surely not - police can't go around just shooting people, even here. Whatever justification the individuals may have had, or thought they had, as an institution that's a situation that can't be tolerated.

Borrowing the terminology, he wasn't their frog. If this was to do with ex-Eclipse members, anyway. But that, at least, isn't truly surprising, is it? A bunch of salarians recently murdered countless of their own, knowing they were innocent, just to further some ill-conceived political agenda. Why would species matter particularly to a... well let's be generous, and say somewhat undiscriminating PMC, since they're making an effort not to reacquire their old reputation as outright criminals, at least.

Hey, maybe I'm wrong and the guys responsible will get kicked off the force - or quietly persuaded to leave. With no jail-time.

Just think of all the money involved on Illium and you get an idea why this won't be tolerated. The Directorate, dickish as they are often enough, will not have wild shootouts in Nos Astra. If nothing else then because it is bad for the business.

I wonder if any of the hundreds of cameras observing public transport stations have caught the beginning of the whole thing. What triggered the interest of the officers in the first place to make them approach him and in what way did they do that?

Should I feel lucky that C-Sec has shot nobody over this yet? I had the feeling that by now the tension had died down a bit, maybe not on Illium.

Except we're not talking about Eclipse, we're talking about former Eclipse who may have been involved. Loyalty to one's own is all very well but I really don't see them putting pressure on their relationship with the Board just on behalf of - hypothetically speaking - one former sister who left the corp to play police and couldn't keep her gun on her back. The stakes are higher than that, on both sides - Eclipse enjoys its current status at the Board's discretion, and it can be revoked, and Eclipse can't hold a gun to the head of the planet that handles their banking in the region. Look at that docklands thing a while back, Eclipse gave up a serving sister who'd violated the terms of the Board agreement - the trade concessions are too lucrative for them to risk against trying to interfere in how the Board runs its own police force when (on paper at least) they can viably say they have no involvement with the matter and let it be somebody else's problem.

It comes and goes - you have a better standard of government there, fewer communities feeling disenfranchised. We've got a lot of people angry over something who'll take any justification to throw a rock through someone's window, and that raises blood pressure all round and makes genuine emergencies a lot more likely to flare up.

Still, it's home - got to be 'adorable' about it, as Pariah says, nobody ever helped by being pessimistic. (Plus it's what I get paid for. Well, partly.)

Except they're not - there's no current Eclipse personnel serving with the NAPD, or in the other cities, or with the huntress cadres, not since the war ended. What Justice were talking about with their press release is former Eclipse who have resigned from the PMC to remain in their wartime positions with the police etc.; I'm sure after the Reapers, there were more than a handful who'd lost the taste for being sent into warzones to earn a living.

Sadly true, at the upper levels. There are plenty of decent people in the NAPD though - it's not C-Sec, but it's honest (mostly) work. I think a lot of officers will want to see this disaster tackled properly as well.

Sad but true maybe in this case but still the Directorate will not tolerate trigger happy police (or whoever else) since next time it may not be a random civilian salarian but someone with actual influence.

This event may be containable but it is so easy to piss off the wrong people in Nos Astra. The Directorate is advertising stability for good business, the last thing they want is Eclipse trying to expand into the NAPD or more shootouts in public.
