Hey, drell, what gives? Do you all hate aliens or something? (I thought it was just jellies, but hey, what do I know?)
So I'm walking past Darkly Reflecting Beacon - you know, that jelly arcology that got flushed? - when I notice this crowd of drell. (Okay there were like twelve, but that's more drell than I've seen in the same place since Katamayla. Anyway, there were plenty of bystanders like me, so let's go with crowd) There's this one lady-drell standing on a podium, screaming about gods and blood oaths and sacrificing aliens and drowning the unbelievers and shit. Y'know, all "we shall pass through the halls like a breeze, and fall upon the heretics like a sandstorm!" kinda stuff. The full crazy. So yeah. I thought all that blood-scars-angels of breath stuff was made up for holovision like Tethys Reave and that. Do you drell guys really believe all that stuff? I tried plexing it but it's all snooty hanar academics and TLE fandoms =/ Edit: oh yeah any Enkindled types should probs stay away from Widdershins Spire and the area, just as a heads up. What can I say, other than stating the obvious and saying that we can get passionate about certain things?
Tethys Reave's rants and raves were mostly historical accurate. The Old Ways demands sacrifice, dedication and passion. It doesn't mean of course that every follower of the old ways are blood thirsty, they faith has been greatly sanitized after the exodus. During the height The Faith it was another story. As an example, thousands were sacrificed each decade to celebrate the rule of the Unspoken King. The exact number is actually unknown what is know however is that people were sacrificed until the blood of those sacrifices, flowed from the summit of the Divine Spire all the way to the steps of the imperial palace. Not that sacrifices were only a once in the decade occurrence, many historical papers show that the ruling cast of blood priests expected daily sacrifices, mostly animals, but sometimes drell. (The Unknown King once again upped the stakes by having hundreds of drell sacrifices on the divine spire, daily.) Scarring and blood oaths are similarly something that has been sanitized, and before you ask, no it was not just blood parts. As I said above drell get passionate and traditional believes are a visceral experience, sometimes it meant blood had to be spilled, other times this means feasts or even orgies had to be had. You can imagine that we came into contact with, and were saved by the far more ascetic hanar we had to reign all of this in. Now most of the drell who follow the old ways do so in a symbolic way. As a side note: Corona wrote:"we shall pass through the halls like a breeze, and fall upon the heretics like a sandstorm!"
Is very similar to the Denunciation of the Ghor; which was made when the Sapphire Empire wiped out the Ghor kingdom, the one of the largest monotheistic kingdom on Rakhana, the halls in this context was the Ziggurat of Anneb, which Ghor had reconcerted to their deity. The Empire solved that 'problem' in the then traditional manner; spilling the blood of the enemy as the priests performed the rites of afferment.Sere Hadas Kronos Priest of the Citadel Temple, Hierophant, Ritualist, Walker of the Ember Path- You won't get a refund just because I became a priest, all sales were and are still final. |

No, they are not 'all historical drell' but they are the most awesome ones, and the temple builders, unlike those that came after them, didn't wreck the planet. Hmm, it believes it is. It never had any idea that the drell were so bloodthirsty, though it probably does explain many things about the species as a whole. Scarring and blood oaths are similarly something that has been sanitized, and before you ask, no it was not just blood parts. "Passion" such an odd word for what this one would call "undisciplined" and... well maybe it shouldn't say that would be too rude. Mr Humble Hanar, think about it. If you are undisciplined during a blood oath, you're going to kill yourself when you cut or worse, screw up and inflict upon yourself a permanent injury that makes you a detriment to your clan.
And if you're not passionate, you're not going to have the guts to make the cut in the first place. If you live on a planet where everything is trying to kill you, of course you are going to learn the lessons of the spirits of your world. If the ancient drell didn't do the sacrifice thing they probably would have lost hundreds to starvation or disease instead. they're culling their own population to the amount their resources can nurture. It doesn't make sense for anyone not in that situation to be doing that which is why most drell don't do that any more (not sure about any survivors on Rakhana.) i'm not even a shaman or a social studies major and i can figure that out. I know that's scary to think about I can't imagine living somewhere where the Spirits didn't give enough for everyone. At least we can own our failures, Uplift. Our homeworld couldn't support us through the dirty industrial stage, but we were doing it by ourselves. ...I want to know how many works of drell literature they make you read in school. No, not all cultures were like that. The temple builders weren't like that all the time, either, and most of the records we have from that era are grand declarations of Kings and epic poems. Full of bombast, iffy on the numbers. I once knew a drell who made roughly the opposite point - to him, going through life constantly losing parts of one's past, unable to entirely control the process of recollection except by unconscious assessments of how 'important' the memory was (based on who knows what criteria, which may or may not turn out to have been erroneous in hindsight anyway) sounded like a recipe for living in a constant state of identity crisis.Of course, one could say that life (as we see it) is a constant identity crisis, but if so I guess it's one we've adapted to passably well. You judge us for not knowing how to build a high space-faring civilization from scratch? You don't know how. You can't know how. You couldn't have done a damn thing without help, not even evolve! Your star is too young and will die too soon! None of the other species do either!
