Na’Hesit Politician Barok Hak-kar Found Dead

Cross-Posted from Confederate News Broadcasting

Erszbat, Kite’s Nest - Pro-slavery worlds within the batarian Confederation are accusing their anti-slavery opponents, the Ub’Hesit, of overlooking crimes against known supporters of the practice following the brutal murder of yet another politician on the Confederate world of Erszbat.

One of the few members of the former government to survive the Reaper War, Barok Hak-kar was the leader of the small but vocal Na’Hesit faction on the Erszbat council. Unlike other pro-slavery survivors, he refused to flee Erszbat after the war, insisting that “…the voice of tradition must be heard, else the batarian people lose themselves entirely.”

He was found badly beaten in his study earlier this week, the announcement of his death delayed only by problems confirming the identity of the body. Law enforcement on Erszbat reports no suspects and no leads, the politician’s home having burnt to the ground shortly after the body’s removal. Hak-kar joins the long list of politicians that have met grisly ends in the Confederation since the fall of the Hegemony, and will not be afforded a state funeral for security reasons.

Damn it, this is the last thing the anti-slavery cause needs. Murdering pro-slavers, even if they were former Hegemony, does absolutely nothing but ERODE your legitimacy and support, for heaven's sake. The fact that Mr. Hak-kar was also one of a minority of pro-slaver Hegemony survivors in the Na'hesit means that now, you have a political minority that feels they're being oppressed and illegally marginalised.

Fine show, whoever you are, you're doing a fine job of bolstering the dead man's argument by comparison.

As if losing one of our leaders wasn't bad enough, just wait until you see the extremists on both sides of the slavery debate exploit this for their own ends.

Damn whoever committed this murder, this is not what the batarian people need right now.

Huh. Some of my people just got back from Erszbat. What a small galaxy.

Anyway, it couldn't have happened to a nicer individual.

Well that's not suspicious at all.

I'm sure the man has no desire to see a return of the slavery portion of batarian culture gain power.

On the Move.

Oh, dear. It seems you have me. I sent my people deep into the Kite's Nest to kill a middling politician on a planet that's had repeated incidences of this exact same behavior. And then I ominously alluded to it on the extranet, because making those sorts of vague threats is the only thing that gets me off any more.

He was pro slavery.

He was brutally murdered.

Y'know I'd call that "justice." People who try to take away other's freedoms all ought to get what's comin' to 'em.

I don't see the problem here?

But I've a rendezvous with Death
At midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips north again this year,
And I to my pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous.

In defense of the depressed batarian, you did spend a lot of time in an organization known for alluding to vague threats on the extranet. You know how it goes, you hang out with hermetic dream pop fans long enough and 'vavoom' is going to start finding its way into your conversations.

(Note: Please, please stop saying 'vavoom'. It is not an acceptable substitute for any noun ever.)

Dang, Ana'Therion beat me to it. I wasn't on this site back then, but even so I've seen far more of this "secret-but-not-really-especially-if-you-pay-attention-to-our-ominous-cryptic-messages" thing from Cerberus then I'd have believed possible.

As for the news article itself, I don't approve of vigilantism - assuming that's what actually happened - and I suspect the political consequences won't be good. But I can't say that it's probably not a worse galaxy without this guy.

Clearly, RTB's situation is just a coincidence, Mekan. He's just trying to get under your skin.
As for the assassination, it's a shame that the pro-slavery politician met such an unruly end.

I'd like to be indignant at what's happened, but honestly, I can't muster up the moral outrage. I dunno if it's because I'm too tired for it or too desensitized. I won't say good riddance, but I can't say this inspired anything particularly strong.

Instead, I'll ask Sicaria where the justice she's advocating went after she blew up a train.

One of my people's leaders was murdered in his own home, at a time of extremely fragile political relations between the Na'Hesit and Ub'Hesit. Do you lot not see how events such as this could lead to drastic consequences for my people? Especially if the extremists end up getting their way. We could very well have a civil war within the Confederation if killings such as this are not stopped.

And yet, your collective reaction to this makes me think you do not care just how serious the situation really is.

More than one, I'd say. Your leaders have been dropping like flies.

Hm. Now that I think about it, that's a remarkably apt comparison.

I'm not trying to downplay the political consequences of his murder, but I just cannot bring myself to say that the slavery advocate in question is a loss to the galaxy.

Quit your bitching groper, not like you're losing much. Na'Hesit AND stirring shit up with being pro-slavery, on Erszbat. That's a guy without a lotta will to live. 'Cause come on, the Bins should just have a big sign in orbit saying "WELCOME: ALL SLAVERS WILL BE GUTTED". Hak-kar wasn't in it for the long-term, trust me. Find someone else to piss yourself over.

Oh and I'd put up "BEHOLD OUR UGLY WOMEN AND CRATERS," but what're you gonna do?

For once that's something I learned before seeing it on CDN. As a citizen of Erszbat and, obviously, a slaver of the traditional kind, I am very upset. Actually the mood is very stern on the Unexpected Opportunity today. I'm ok with people disagreeing with us, but Mr Hak-kar was a man of dialog, who didn't impose his view and wanted compromise between those who would advocate the brutal form of slavery induced by the hegemony and the entire removal of that integral part of our culture and identity.
I can't imagine the next in line will be as open to compromise and fair play.

As others pointed it out, it'll do no good to the anti-slavery cause either. And when the extremists decide to act on it, the civilians will pay the price. It was a terrible thing to do, and nobody will benefit for it.

So justice is to kill people who think differently from you Ms Perihelion? I'm not exactly familiar with the plight of your people, but from what I understand they've been oppressed by people who killed them for thinking differently no? Did it seem just to you?
