Out Of Character Notes For: Custodian

OOC:

Putting this here until I can confirm if the Bio is supposed to have been written in universe and viewed by other characters or not.

Appearance: Large and heavily built, Archer’s muscled body is going to fat and there are visible signs of having led a hard life. His dark brown hair and beard are turning grey with age, with a long scar running parallel to his right eyebrow. Further scarring is present across his body, including traces of a notably large wound across his stomach. It’s rare to see him out of the grey and black uniform of his ship or Crisis heavy armour.

Personality: Archer is an oddity amongst most mercenary groups, often only accepting certain jobs while ignoring more lucrative deals. This is largely due to his efforts to focus upon defending others against threats rather than working for known criminals or launching raids on settlements. This is done as much for his own safety as being moral reasons, knowing full well that such work would only bring down the wrath of others upon his ship. The last thing he wants is to give more people a reason to see him dead.

He can be trusted to give an honest opinion on any subject and can usually be counted upon to keep the bigger picture in perspective, but can still be held back by personal bias. More than once Archer’s simmering dislike for batarians has dragged his crew into unnecessary fights.

History: The subject of Archer’s early life on Earth is something of an enigma as he tends to change the subject as fast as possible when it is brought up in conversation. All that he is willing to say about it is that he was born to “as big a family of paranoid, backwards luddites as you can find in this day and age” and that most of his childhood was spent looking up at the stars. Joining the Alliance navy at the first opportunity and staying with it for the better part of his adult life.

Notes from his superiors during this time indicated that Archer had leadership skills and the determination to command a ship but also a glory seeking streak which had proved problematic. Occasionally resulting in him either taking unnecessary risks or ignoring his better judgment when it was needed the most. While this never became a true problem it prevented him rising above the rank of captain or commanding anything larger than a frigate.

Archer’s career came to an abrupt end during the Skyllian Blitz in which his frigate, the Falklands, became embroiled in the massive pirate assault. Despite initial successes during the battle and forcing several smaller pirate vessels into a full retreat, they were unfortunate enough to have a pirate cruiser jump into the system directly ahead of them.
With its openly volley almost completely crippling the Falklands and the pirates preparing to finish them off, Archer chose to ignore orders telling him to fall back and rammed the ship. Fortunately this did not result in their total destruction and the Falklands skittered across the cruiser’ hull, ripping off the cruiser’s main sensor pod rendering the pirates blind. While this prevented the cruiser finishing them off the damage forced the surviving crew to abandon the frigate as it broke apart, escaping planetside in shuttles and evacuation pods.

Archer was seen as having been responsible for the loss of the ship and disobeying orders which could have saved it. After taking into account that his actions did prevent the last of his crew being killed he was dishonourably discharged from the Alliance military.

Set in his ways and having no skills besides commanding ships, Archer appeared some time later having salvaged the stripped down hull of a cruiser and managed to make it combat worthy again. Using the cruiser, now called the Keeper of Heaven, as a mercenary ship to defend any colonies capable of affording his services.

For the better part of a decade he has been commanding the ship, trying to keep it flight worthy and hoping to live long enough to retire peacefully. Something which has not made easy by skirmishes with Eclipse mercenaries, fighting terrorists and sentient fungi at the command of the Salarian STG, a mysterious encounter with thresher maws and the Reaper War.
